The Americans with Disabilities Act Unit works to ensure that all individuals with disabilities are given an opportunity to participate in and benefit from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s (DHMH) services, programs, benefits, and employment opportunities.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which is divided into five titles, was signed into law in 1990 and gives civil rights protection to qualified individuals with disabilities. Our office strives to prohibit discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities in employment by

• Providing information and technical assistance on ADA as it affects individuals, patients, clients, consumers, employers and employees of DHMH-operated programs and facilities.
• Interpreting applicable laws and regulations to ​departmental staff.
• Investigating complaints of discrimination in employment and program accessibility regarding the disabled
• Providing technical assistance to program and administrative staff regarding compliance with ADA laws and regulations
• Acting as a liaison between the Governor’s Office of Individuals with Disabilities and the U.S. Office for Civil Rights
