Procedures for Obtaining Continuing Education Credit

Sponsors of a Continuing Education Program

Associations or organizations conducting a continuing education program for their members or staff must apply to the Board for prior approval of the program. An officer of the organization must submit the “Application for Prior Approval of Continuing Education Program/Activity” at least 30 days prior to the program. The Board does not have the authority to approve applications that are untimely. The applicant should retain a copy of the application. The Board will advise you of approval or denial via email, so please be sure to include the email contact on the application. Continuing education is approved at Board meetings on the third Thursday of each month, with the exception of the month of December when Board meetings are not held. If the program is approved by the Board, all licensees who attend do not need to request individual approval.

    Licensees Requesting Prior Approval

Programs sponsored by ASHA, AAA, IHS, MSHA, MAA or the Hearing Society of MD, DC, and DE are accepted by the Board. Programs approved by these organizations for continuing education are approved by the Board in most instances. Licensees are strongly encouraged to request prior approval of a program if in doubt concerning the relevance of a continuing education program. Licensees who attend programs that are not approved will not receive continuing education credit for those programs. Licensees who attend programs that are approved for a lower number of CEUs than advertised by the provider will receive credit only for the number of CEUs approved.

    Individual Participation

A licensee who plans to attend, or who has attended, a continuing education program for which the sponsor has not received prior approval must submit the “Application for Approval of a Continuing Education Program for Individual Participation.” (If unsure if the program has been approved, contact the Board.) The application should be submitted no later than 30 days before or after the program. The Board will advise you of approval or denial via email, so please be sure to include the email contact on the application. Continuing education is approved at Board meetings on the third Thursday of each month, with the exception of the month of December when Board meetings are not held. The licensee should contact the Board if no response is received within three weeks of submission. The licensee is responsible for obtaining a certificate documenting their attendance at the program.

CE Credit for Attending Open Sessions of Board Meetings

A licensee in audiology, hearing aid dispensing and speech-language therapy may earn CE credit for attendance at open sessions of Board meetings. Attendees are required to sign in on a special attendance sheet to ensure that CE is awarded. Licensees who plan to attend Board meetings should send an email to Oluremi.dean@maryland.gov in advance so that all necessary arrangements can be made.
