Deer’s Head Hospital Center is home of three of sixteen WBOC-TV 16’s Jefferson Award winners. The three winners are Dave Duitscher, Liz Maldve, and Beverley Thompson.

Duitscher has volunteered at DHHC over 12 years, logging over 5,000 hours. He serves as volunteer chaplain director, auxiliary board member, and has served as President. He was nominated by fellow volunteer chaplain Fritz Danielus, and volunteer director of Holly Community, Rose Carey. Duitscher also volunteers at Holly Center, Coastal Hospice, Ruritan, Blood Bank, and Christ United Methodist Church. Duitscher has been a recipient of the Maryland You are Beautiful award.

ldve was nominated by Helen Young, DHHC volunteer director for her 44 years of outstanding service. Maldve now volunteers over 2,000 hours per year in the volunteer office greeting patients and staff, delivering patient mail, running errands, and helping with fundraisers and events. Documentation on Maldve’s service hours was only tracked since 1996, indicating she’s only logged 13,000 hours. Hours from her first 32 years of service were not formally recorded. Maldve is an auxiliary board member and has served as President. She’s won a lifetime achievement award from the Governor’s Office on Volunteerism, an award from Wicomico Commission on Aging for over 1,000 service hours, and was nominated for a Maryland You Are Beautiful award.

Thompson was nominated by her three children for her lifetime commitment to volunteer work. Thompson is President of the auxiliary board and volunteer shopper. She has served as patient birthday party chair for 19 years and volunteers in the canteen. Bev has logged over 3,000 hours of service and was nominated last year for the Governor’s lifetime achievement award. All three have received a House Resolution and Governor’s Citation for outstanding service and leadership. The three volunteers were recognized at the annual volunteer luncheon in February, where their commercials were shown. The three finalists will now compete with the others for one overall winner, which will be announced at an awards banquet at The Fountains on April 4th. That winner will then travel to a luncheon in Washington, D.C. to compete. For more information on the Jefferson Awards, go to www.wboc.com.
