Pedestrians

  •  In 2013, 110 pedestrians were killed, accounting for 25% of all fatalities in Maryland.1 In 70% of the pedestrian fatalities, the pedestrians were at fault, according to police crash reports.1
  • In 2013, more pedestrian fatalities occurred in the dark (72%) than in daylight (25%), dawn (2%), and dusk (2%).2  
  • Alcohol involvement—for the driver and/or the pedestrian—was reported in 49 percent of all fatal pedestrian crashes in 2013.2
  • More than two-thirds (3,247 of 4,735 or 69%) of the pedestrians killed in traffic crashes were males.2
  • Pedestrian motor vehicle crash deaths have declined dramatically since 1975 but still account for 13 percent of crash deaths. The highest rates of pedestrian deaths in motor vehicle crashes per 100,000 people occur in people ages 70 and older .3 
  • 73% of pedestrians fatalities are in urban areas and 68% 58% of pedestrian fatalities occur during the night.4 
  • The rate of pedestrian deaths per 100,000 people decreased 60 percent between 1975 and 2010.3
  • In 2013, One-fifth (21%) of children 14 and younger killed in traffic crashes were pedestrians.2
  • On average, a pedestrian was killed every 2 hours and injured every 8 minutes in traffic crashes in 2013.2
