INTERIM GUIDELINES FOR EVALUATION OF

SUSPECTED EBOLA INFECTIONS IN

OUTPATIENT SETTINGS

Although we have not had any cases of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) identified in Maryland to date, it is essential that outpatient facilities are prepared to screen and evaluate patients who may be at risk for EVD. To assist with this, the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has created guidance documents and aids for evaluation of suspect EVD patients at outpatient clinics and physician’s offices.
We have included guidelines for screening patients, guidelines for environmental infection control, and a sign template that can be displayed on the front door of your facility.  Please keep in mind that the sign only includes the countries in West Africa that are currently affected by the Ebola outbreak. The situation in Africa is constantly changing and we encourage you to regularly check the CDC website and modify the sign as necessary.
These guidelines are intended to assist you with developing a procedure that is appropriate for your facility. These guidelines are not intended to be taken as a directive or mandate, and can be modified as necessary to best work for your staff and patients.
