​Who We Are

Zoonoses (also called zoonotic diseases) are diseases that are naturally transmitted between animals and humans. Some examples of zoonoses are rabies, avian influenza, and salmonellosis. Vectorborne diseases are those diseases that require a vector, such as a mosquito or tick, for transmission. Lyme disease and West Nile virus are examples of vectorborne diseases.

The Center for Zoonotic and Vectorborne Diseases (CZVBD) works to reduce the incidence and impact of rabies and other zoonotic and vectorborne diseases in Maryland. We do this in partnership with Maryland’s 24 local health departments, other State agencies, health care providers, veterinarians, and the general public.
