Virginia I. Jones Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Council

 Overview

Virginia I. Jones was a dedicated public servant and Marylander who lived with the devastation of Alzheimer’s Disease for more than two decades. Named in her honor, the Council builds upon the work of the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders (ADRD) Commission. Senate Bill 679 (2013) and SB 549 (2016) originally authorized the Council; which was reauthorized in 2019 Senate Bill 522.

Its charge includes improving and enhancing quality of life and support services, both in the home and community, for individuals and their families living with ADRD. This work is accomplished by:

  • Reviewing State statutes, policies and programs;
  • Opening a public comment period to solicit feedback on the 2021 proposed updates; and
  • Convening workgroups as needed.

State Plan

The Maryland State Plan on Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders (ADRD) will be a comprehensive document with recommendations and guidance for partners across the state to best address the needs of Maryland residents with ADRD, as well as their families and caregivers. The new State Plan will be an update to the 2012 Maryland State Plan on ADRD.

2021 Update

In 2020, the Council began the process of reviewing and updating the 2012 Maryland State Plan on
ADRD (the Plan). This extensive revision was undertaken by the Council to ensure the goals, strategies,
and recommendations outlined in the original Plan were fully reassessed and reformulated, where
appropriate, and enhanced and refined to capture the changing needs of Maryland residents with ADRD
as well as their families and caregivers and the advances in knowledge and practice since the 2012 plan
was developed.

In January 2021, the Council convened five workgroups, each tasked with reviewing and updating one of
the five original goals outlined in the 2012 plan. In August 2021, the Council will open a public comment
period to solicit feedback on the proposed updated goals. Please see below for more information.

Public Comment Period

Proposed updates to the State plan will be posted on this page from August 11 to August 27, 2021. Public comments may be sent to Maryland.ADRDplan@gmail.com until September 6, 2021. Additionally, the Council will host two open forums for members of the public to provide feedback. Participation in these meetings will be on a first come first serve basis and subject to a two-minute time limit per person. Please email hanna.navarrete@maryland.gov for more information.
