Avian influenza, sometimes called “bird flu,” refers to the disease caused by a variety of avian influenza viruses.  These viruses are found naturally among aquatic bird species worldwide, and may infect domestic poultry and other bird and animal species in certain circumstances.  Avian influenza viruses do not normally infect humans; however, sporadic human infections with avian influenza have occurred.

In 2014 and 2015, the USDA confirmed cases of avian influenza among avian wildlife and domestic poultry in many states across the country, but no infected birds were identified in Maryland.  There have been no known human infections associated with these outbreaks and the outbreaks have been contained.

The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is working with federal, state and local partners, as well as representatives from the poultry industry, to prepare for an avian influenza incident in Maryland.
