Staff Training Requirements

Superstar staff training must:

  • Include training for staff working on all units caring for children under the age of one.
    • Training can be lecture or computer based.
    • Training should be consistent with the current AAP Policy Statement, and be updated at least whenever a new Policy Statement is released.
  • Include training of new staff as part of orientation.
  • Require periodic competencies or renewal of training.
  • Include all staff members that are likely to directly handle or position an infant (e.g. physicians, nurses, lactation consultants, respiratory therapists, physical therapists).  It is particularly important for lactation consultants to be trained in safe sleep practices so they can help to integrate safe sleep information and breastfeeding support. Include social work as well.
