A healthcare-associated infection is any infection acquired by a patient while receiving care in a healthcare facility. HAIs can occur in all healthcare settings including hospitals, outpatient clinics, nursing homes, hemodialysis facilities, rehabilitation centers, and more. It is estimated that on any given day, one in 25 hospitalized patients has at least one HAI. Adherence to the best practices for infection prevention and control can prevent healthcare-associated infections, keeping patients and healthcare workers safe from the spread of disease-causing germs.​​
