    Google Translate Disclaimer

    The Maryland Department of Information Technology (“DoIT”) offers translations of the content through Google Translate. Because Google Translate is an external website, DoIT does not control the quality or accuracy of translated content. All DoIT content is filtered through Google Translate which may result in unexpected and unpredictable degradation of portions of text, images and the general appearance on translated pages. Google Translate may maintain unique privacy and use policies. These policies are not controlled by DoIT and are not associated with DoIT’s privacy and use policies. After selecting a translation option, users will be notified that they are leaving DoIT’s website. Users should consult the original English content on DoIT’s website if there are any questions about the translated content.

    DoIT uses Google Translate to provide language translations of its content. Google Translate is a free, automated service that relies on data and technology to provide its translations. The Google Translate feature is provided for informational purposes only. Translations cannot be guaranteed as exact or without the inclusion of incorrect or inappropriate language. Google Translate is a third-party service and site users will be leaving DoIT to utilize translated content. As such, DoIT does not guarantee and does not accept responsibility for, the accuracy, reliability, or performance of this service nor the limitations provided by this service, such as the inability to translate specific files like PDFs and graphics (e.g. .jpgs, .gifs, etc.).

    DoIT provides Google Translate as an online tool for its users, but DoIT does not directly endorse the website or imply that it is the only solution available to users. All site visitors may choose to use alternate tools for their translation needs. Any individuals or parties that use DoIT content in translated form, whether by Google Translate or by any other translation services, do so at their own risk. DoIT is not liable for any loss or damages arising out of, or issues related to, the use of or reliance on translated content. DoIT assumes no liability for any site visitor’s activities in connection with use of the Google Translate functionality or content.

    The Google Translate service is a means by which DoIT offers translations of content and is meant solely for the convenience of non-English speaking users of the website. The translated content is provided directly and dynamically by Google; DoIT has no direct control over the translated content as it appears using this tool. Therefore, in all contexts, the English content, as directly provided by DoIT is to be held authoritative.

    MD COVID Alert

    ​MD COVID Alert uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology to quickly notify users who may have been exposed to COVID-19. MD COVID Alert pairs seamlessly with Maryland’s traditional contact tracing efforts by using Exposure Notifications technology to notify users who may have been exposed to an infected person. Opt-in today to participate in protecting all Marylanders from COVID-19.


     STEP ONE: Opt-in to MD COVID Alert on your phone

    For iPhones:
    Go to Settings and Turn On Exposure Notifications. Opt-in and select your region as Maryland and complete the onboarding as needed.

    To enable MD COVID Alert, you must have one of the following iOS versions:

    • iPhone 6s or newer: iOS 13.7 or later
    • iPhone 5s, 6, or 6 Plus: iOS 12.5

    For Android Devices:
    The MD COVID Alert app is available on Google Play. You can also search for “MD COVID Alert” directly in the Play Store.
    Android users can use MD COVID Alert if their phone supports Bluetooth Low Energy, Android Version 6 (API 23) or above, and can access the Google Play Store.


    STEP TWO – Receive random identification number
    Once you opt-in (iPhone) or download the app (Android), the system will assign you a random identification number. The numbers change every 10-20 minutes and cannot be used to identify you or your location. MD COVID Alert uses Bluetooth Low Energy technology—not Location settings—to determine when any two or more random identification numbers (i.e., phones) have been in contact for 15 minutes or more at a distance of 6 feet or less.

    MD COVID Alert does not need to be open to work; it will run in the background, without draining your battery or data, to exchange these privacy-preserving random identification numbers via Bluetooth. Users do have to enable Bluetooth in order to detect how close you are to the phones of other users.


    STEP THREE – Receive notification if you are identified as a close contact
    Each day, MD COVID Alert downloads the list of all random identification numbers associated with verified positive COVID-19 cases and checks them against all numbers encountered in the two days prior to the positive test or symptom onset date.
    If there’s a match, you will be notified of the possible exposure to COVID-19 and instructed about what to do next.

    IF YOU ARE ALERTED:

    Determine your date of exposure.
    On an iPhone, go to Settings and open Exposure Notifications. The exposure date is found under “You might have been exposed to COVID-19…” On an Android phone, your date of exposure is conveyed in the alert message under “possible exposure date.”

    Begin taking precautions.
    If you receive an exposure alert, you should immediately start to wear a well-fitting mask when around others at home and indoors in public for a full 10 days after your last exposure date. You should test yourself or get a test 5 full days after your last exposure date and follow testing guidance.

    Monitor for symptoms and act if you get them.
    Watch for signs and symptoms of COVID-19 for 10 days after your exposure. If you develop symptoms, test immediately and begin to isolate.


    How Your Privacy is Protected
    • You have full control to opt in to receive Exposure Notifications and can turn it off at any time.
    • The service will never track your location — it uses Bluetooth rather than GPS.
    • Your identity will never be revealed to anyone.
    • The service will never collect, transmit or store any of your personal information.
