    PDMP Registration FAQs

    1. What if I am not PDMP Registered and need to sign up?
If you know that you are not PDMP Registered but fall under the requirement, please visit the PDMP Registration page (https://crisphealth.org/services/prescription-drug-monitoring-program-pdmp/pdmp-registration/) and complete the appropriate registration workflow:
    • PRESCRIBERS: If you already have a DEA number and state CDS permit, please enter Auto-Registration; if you do not have both numbers, use the Standard Registration.
    • PHARMACISTS: Please enter Standard Registration, which has been streamlined.
On the left-hand side of the page, you’ll see downloadable step-by-step guides to follow along each pieces of the registration process.

    2. What should I do if I don’t know if I’m registered, or if I think I’m registered but don’t have a PDMP Registration Confirmation Code?
You may not be sure if you’re registered or you may have access to CRISP/PDMP through an integration with your hospital or clinic’s EMR (sometimes called SSO or single sign-on, or sometimes called a “CRISP button”).  If you have only an SSO account, your access to CRISP/PDMP is employment contingent, so that if you left your current place of work you would no longer have a valid account.  All providers must have an individual account.
You can confirm your registration status and obtain your Confirmation Code with one simple step. Navigate to the PDMP Auto-Registration front page (https://crisphealth.force.com/crispregkeydata), select your health profession (Member Title), and then:
    • PRESCRIBERS: enter your license and DEA numbers.
    • PHARMACISTS: enter just your license number.
Finally, enter the red characters displayed in the gray window and hit “Submit.”

If you are already registered, the system will let you know and will stop you from re-registering. You will be shown your PDMP Registration Confirmation Code and your email account on record will also be emailed a copy of your Confirmation Code.

If you are not registered, you will know because the system will take you to the next step of registration, confirming your name.  You may wish to return to complete registration when you have time, so please know you can always initiate registration from the PDMP Webpage here: https://crisphealth.org/services/prescription-drug-monitoring-program-pdmp/pdmp-registration/

    3. What should I do if when I tried to register, I got an error message that said “The user already exists, Use another Email.”?
This may have occurred if you attempted to start a new registration or check your registration status through the “Standard Registration” workflow.  Please follow the instructions below to check for a Confirmation Code linked to your account, which will confirm your registration status.  However, another option is that you may have completed some but not all steps required for registration, in which case you will need to log back into the registration workflow to complete registration.  If that is the case, you will want to re-log into the registration portal (https://crisphealth.force.com/crisp2_login) by entering your email address into the text box below the blue “register” button and follow the directions from there.

    4. What if I’m trying to register and I don’t see my place of employment in the Organization drop-down options?
In your situation, please enter your current place of employment into the text box that is right above the Organization drop-down menu.  It will accept new organizations that are not already on the dropdown.  Otherwise, please enter "No Organization," which is designated for individuals who are either unemployed, or who work in a non-clinical job role, but can also be used to meet the PDMP Registration requirement for someone who is maintaining a license in Maryland but who works in another state and therefore does not need to actually access the Maryland PDMP.  If you do the latter, you will be granted a PDMP account, but you will not be credentialed (provided a valid password) because you are not in a clinical organization that would mean you have a use case for Maryland PDMP data as a clinical user.

    5. If I am a pharmacist and report data to the PDMP on behalf of my pharmacy, does that mean I’m PDMP Registered?
You may be reporting prescription dispensing data to the PDMP on behalf of the pharmacy at which you work. This is an important role and ensures your pharmacy is in compliance with the requirement that any dispenser of controlled dangerous substance (CDS) prescriptions must report these records to the PDMP. However, separate from the requirement on a dispensing entity to report data to the PDMP, there is a legal requirement for all pharmacists licensed in Maryland to be registered with the PDMP as a clinical user.  You must individually register in order to become compliant and to get access to the data.

Please visit the PDMP Registration page (https://crisphealth.org/services/prescription-drug-monitoring-program-pdmp/pdmp-registration/) and complete the Standard Registration.

    6. Can a Maryland-licensed pharmacist be granted access to Maryland’s PDMP when working in another state?
If someone is licensed as a pharmacist in Maryland, they may be granted access to query PDMP data. A Maryland-licensed pharmacist may be employed at a mail-order pharmacy in another state and have a valid treatment relationship with Maryland patients because they are dispensing through mail-order to Maryland addresses. Therefore, pharmacists who are Maryland-registered regardless of the state in which they are employed can register for the PDMP and be credentialed for PDMP access for patients with whom they have a treatment relationship.

    7.  If I am not PDMP Registered, and prefer to surrender my CDS Registration/Permit instead of register what do I need to do?
If you know or discover that you are not PDMP Registered, but you are in possession of a Maryland CDS Registration (Permit) issued by the Office of Controlled Substances Administration (OCSA), you may choose to surrender your CDS permit.  As a CDS Registration holder, you need to fill out the Surrender Letter to discontinue to prescribe, store or dispense controlled substances.  The Surrender Letter is found online here: https://health.maryland.gov/ocsa/Pages/CDS-Application.aspx
You will return your original CDS certificate along with the Surrender letter to OCSA at 4201 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21215.

    8. What if I have access to the CRISP Clinical Query Portal but I was told I am not PDMP Registered?
If you have access to CRISP Clinical Data (hospital encounter, labs, and radiology feeds) through an individual log-in account to CRISP, but do not have access to view PDMP data (controlled substances prescription dispensings), you may have a CRISP account but still not have met the PDMP registration requirements.  This is easy to fix by simply calling the CRISP Operations Support staff at 877-952-7477 and informing them that you have a CRISP clinical account without PDMP, and you need to become PDMP registered.

    9. What should I do if I am retired, have moved out of state, allowed my CDS permit or pharmacist license to lapse, or am reaching out on behalf of a deceased provider?
If you fall under any condition that means you no longer prescribe CDS or practice pharmacy in Maryland or under a Maryland license, you should confirm this status or intention to the Maryland PDMP Office in writing at mdh.pdmp@maryland.gov  More specific instructions follow:
    • If you are retired but wish to keep your CDS registration active – PDMP registration is required and OCSA notification is required to include registrant address update.
    • If you are retired and wish to surrender your CDS registration – PDMP notification is required but registration is not required.  Additionally, OCSA requires the registrant to mail the CDS permit and surrender letter to OCSA.
    • If you have moved out of state but wish to keep your CDS registration active – PDMP registration is required.  Additionally, OCSA Notification and change of address is required.
    • If you have moved out of state and wish to surrender your CDS registration - PDMP notification is required but registration is not required.  Additionally, OCSA requires the registrant to mail the CDS permit and surrender letter to OCSA at 4201 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21215.
    • If you are reaching out on behalf of a deceased provider – PDMP notification is required.  Additionally, OCSA Notification and return of the CDS permit (if possible) is required.

    10. Do veterinarians need to register with the PDMP?
If a veterinarian can legally prescribe CDS for an animal in Maryland, they are required by law to be registered with the PDMP.  Veterinarians need to demonstrate that they are PDMP-registered when they apply for a new or renewal CDS registration. If a veterinarian is not in possession of the qualifications to legally prescribe CDS in Maryland, then the veterinarian is not subject to the registration mandate.

While veterinarians are required to be PDMP-registered in order to obtain a new or renewal CDS registration, the PDMP statute does not grant veterinarians the authority to review PDMP data. Therefore, veterinarians are not subject to the use mandate, nor are they allowed to log into CRISP and query PDMP data even outside the use mandate.

    11.  What are the requirements of CRISP's Point of Contact Verification Tool for PDMP Users?
CRISP's Point of Contact (POC) Verification Tool for Users of the PDMP verifies that an employee is still working at the registered place of business/pharmacy.  A POC is designated for each business/pharmacy at registration and the organization is responsible to notify CRISP of any changes to their POC. CRISP verifies that all employees linked to that organization still work there through the POC. If the POC does not reply to the verification request every 90 days, then all delegates will be removed from PDMP access at the organization.  Should this occur, the POC would need to be added back to the organization and delegate-delegator relationships would need to be rebuilt.  Prescribers and pharmacists will not lose PDMP access if the POC does not verify their registered place of employment to minimize barriers to accessing the PDMP; however, all POC's should regularly update CRISP and let the Help Desk know when a prescriber, delegator, or delegate leaves employment, so that their PDMP account can be deactivated.  Delegate accounts should be linked to an active employee only.

If a prescriber has PDMP access AND clinical access and the POC does not verify the prescriber, the prescriber will lose clinical access, but not PDMP access.
